7 Ways to Prevent the Pre-Mammogram Jitters
Everyone knows how important mammograms are for early detection. But they’re so easy to put off—“next week” easily turns into “next month” or even “next year”!
We hope you see Breast Cancer Awareness Month as the perfect opportunity to stop procrastinating and ask for a referral to the Cheyenne Women’s Imaging Pavilion at Cheyenne Radiology.
Procrastination is often the first hurdle to getting a mammogram, but the pre-mammogram jitters can stress you out before the procedure has even started. As part of our commitment to compassionate care, we’ve collected some greats on how to minimize the pre-mammogram jitters and make your experience as comfortable as possible:
1. Schedule your appointment on a day in your menstrual cycle when your breasts are the least likely to be tender. That way you are minimizing the discomfort felt during the process.
2. Even though you might get a little sweaty, avoid using deodorant or antiperspirant and perfumes, because they may contain small flecks of metal that can lead to confusing images.
3. Wear your favorite two-piece outfit. There are two benefits: you’ll feel great and it will be easier for you to remove your top and bra for the mammogram.
4. Relax before your appointment. Curl up on the couch with a nice book and a hot cup of mint tea. Try to avoid the double shot espresso, because the caffeine may make your breasts more sensitive.
5. Bring your mammogram-savvy friend for support. She’ll give you the real details about how mammography isn’t as scary as you think it is.
6. Ask questions during your appointment. The old saying is true: Knowledge is power. A lot of pre-mammogram jitters come from being worried about the unknown. We’re ready to give you all the information you need about what to expect, so you feel comfortable during your appointment.
7. Of course, we think the best way is to ask your doctor for a referral to The Cheyenne Women’s Imaging Pavilion at Cheyenne Radiology. We offer more than mammography—for example, the latest technology (like Breast MRI), the most compassionate care, and the highest accreditation possible for a diagnostic imaging center.
